Grigory Jakovlevich Bahchivandzhi (1909-1943)

Grigory Jakovlevich Bahchivandzhi (1909-1943) – the test pilot of scientific research institute of the Air Forces, the Hero of Soviet Union. Was born and has grown in a village Brinkovsky nowadays Primorsko-Ahtarsky area of Krasnodar territory. Since 1931 in the Soviet Army. Has ended the Orenburg flight military college in 1934, having 2 military specialities: technics on arms and the pilot. Since June, 1941 - the participant of the Great Patriotic War. By August, 1941 the fighter pilot captain Bahchivandzhi has made 65 fighting starts, took part in defence of Moscow, personally and in group has brought down 5 planes of the opponent, all during stay at the front has destroyed in air of 10 planes of the opponent. In 1942 Bahchivandzhi has been withdrawn for tests of new jet plane BI-1 with the liquid jet engine and in May of the same year has made the first flight. Since August, 1941 was engaged in test of new models of planes, risking a life, self-denyingly overcame difficulties of work. I. Бахчиванджи was lost during the seventh test flight on БИ, having reached record speed of 800 km/hour. To it the rank of the Hero of Soviet Union is posthumously appropriated. JU.A.Gagarin said that without flights of Bahchivandzhi, would not be possible and on April, 12th, 1961. On mark G.J.Bahchivandzhi's portrait and plane BI-1 model is represented.
